Consumer Reports’ Methodology: How Reliability Is Scored

Known for its comprehensive analysis, Consumer Reports evaluated over 200 new vehicles using extensive road test data, owner satisfaction surveys, reliability metrics, and safety performance. Subaru’s impressive rise in the rankings highlights its dedication to producing dependable vehicles that resonate with drivers.

Each year, Consumer Reports gathers data from hundreds of thousands of vehicle owners, focusing on issues they’ve encountered in the past 12 months. For the 2025 report, over 300,000 vehicles spanning model years 2000 to early 2025 were analyzed. The organization’s experts identified 20 key trouble areas, from minor nuisances like squeaky brakes to significant issues with engines, transmissions, and advanced EV systems. Reliability predictions are heavily influenced by a vehicle’s performance over the past three years, emphasizing consistent dependability. Consumer Reports also considers brand-wide reliability, ensuring a well-rounded view of an automaker’s lineup.

Subaru’s Commitment to Reliability Pays Off

Subaru has climbed to the top spot in Consumer Reports’ rankings, dethroning Lexus and Toyota, which have traditionally dominated the list. Of Subaru’s seven models evaluated, most received high marks for reliability. The Forester and Impreza achieved the highest ratings, while the Crosstrek, Legacy, Outback, and Ascent scored above average or average.

Consumer Reports’ experts attribute Subaru’s success to its conservative approach to vehicle redesigns and its strategic use of proven, reliable components across its lineup. This method reduces the risk of introducing new problems during updates. [1: Consumer Reports]

Subaru’s cars share many reliable components,” says Steven Elek, Program Leader, Auto Data Analytics at Consumer Reports. [2: Bergmann, Andy]This commonality means that when Subaru redesigns a vehicle, it can make fewer incremental changes by carrying over dependable systems. This reduces the risk of new problems.”

A Competitive Field: Subaru Outpaces Automotive Giants

Subaru’s ascent marks the first time since 2020 that neither Lexus nor Toyota has claimed the top spot. Lexus placed second this year, followed by Toyota in third. While both brands maintain strong reputations, below-average scores for Toyota’s Tacoma and Tundra pickups, as well as its bZ4X EV, affected their standings.

Other brands rounding out the top five include BMW in fourth place and Honda in fifth. Despite the competition, Subaru’s consistent reliability across its lineup set it apart, reclaiming the number one position in Consumer Reports’ 2025 rankings.

Subaru’s Continued Dedication to Excellence

Choosing a reliable vehicle is essential for minimizing repair costs and ensuring long-term peace of mind. While brand rankings provide valuable insights, Consumer Reports emphasizes the importance of evaluating individual models, as reliability can vary even within top-rated brands.

Subaru’s achievement underscores the brand’s steadfast commitment to quality and reliability. By prioritizing proven engineering and thoughtful redesigns, Subaru has earned the trust of its customers and solidified its position as a leader in the automotive industry.

Whether it’s the rugged reliability of the Forester or the everyday practicality of the Crosstrek, Subaru’s vehicles continue to resonate with drivers seeking long-term dependability. As the automotive landscape evolves, Subaru’s focus on creating reliable, customer-centric vehicles positions it for continued success.
